Pediatric Critical Care Nursing Theory

Course Description :

This course explores the assessment, monitoring and nursing management of common problems for children with critical condition by applying nursing process and Neuman’s system model. Drug administration and fluid therapy are also introduced. The principles and techniques of child’s life-support as well as the utilization of the equipment will be focused.

 
General Objectives :

The training program enables trainees to Gain knowledge and develop a good attitude in pediatric critical care, including convince about biopsychosocial needs of family and child. Also to gain ability in analyzing applying Neuman’s system model and decision making for pediatric critical care nursing.

 
Specific Objectives :
Upon completion of this course the trainees will be able to:
  1. Explain the responses of children and families to critical condition.   
  2. Explain assessing methods and monitoring for children with critical problems.
  3. Identify principles and methods of medication, nutrition, and fluid replacement for children with critical condition.
  4. Define principles and techniques for the resuscitation of children.
  5. Explain how to prepare, utilize, and maintain the equipment used in caring for children in critical condition.
  6. Applying Neuman’s system model for pediatric critical patients.

Pediatric Critical Care Nursing Practicum 
 

Credits :           5 credits

 
Course Description :
Applying nursing process and nursing theories for providing appropriate pediatric critical care nursing. Assessing and monitoring symptoms and signs will be emphasized.  Additionally, nursing skills for critical care including selecting appropriate equipment as well as its maintenance will be focused. 
 
General Objectives :
Develop nursing skills and gain critical thinking and decision - making skills in nursing care for neonates and children with critical condition by applying nursing process and nursing theories.
 
Specific Objectives :

Upon completing this course the trainees will be able to:

  1. Provide appropriate pediatric critical care nursing through nursing process and nursing theories.
  2. Assess and monitor symptoms and signs which are high risk for life.
  3. Practice nursing skills and select appropriate equipment related to the children’s condition.
Learning Activities :
  1. Create nursing care plan and apply to appropriate  nursing  theories 
  2. Provide holistic care for neonates and children with critical condition
  3. Nursing care conference / case incident conference
  4. Nursing round
  5. Clinical project / Clinical research
  6. Special lecture

Evaluation Methods :
A trainee’s grade will be determined by the achievement in the following areas

1. Nursing performance and nursing care plan 
50%
2. Nursing care conference    
20%
3. Clinical project /Clinical research      
20%

The grading system will comprise of nine scales: A, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D.

 

Course Requirements :

Trainees must satisfy the following requirements:
  1. Nursing practice time at least  90%
  2. Total score  at least  70%

Clinical Placement :

Queen Sirikit National Institiute of Child Health, Bangkok in 3 areas :

  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
  • Neonatal Surgical Unit
  • Newborn  Intensive Care Unit
